Hi All
I bought my Sony Viao about 3 years ago. Ever since I got I was disappointed with it but needed it for college.
Its extremely slow, its VERY noisy and seems to overheat quite quickly, the fan comes on as soon as I switch it on - is this normal?
Any help is much appreciated.

Hi Laura and welcome to Club Vaio.
It is probably normal but if you would like to tell us which Vaio model you have we may be able to help more. What do you use it for mostly?
Try downloading MOBILEMETER and tell us what the CPU temperatures are when using your Vaio lightly and also under load when playing a game or a DVD. It may be that your cooling vents are blocked.
To speed your Vaio up, why not download TUNE-UP UTILITIES 2007 - it is free for 30 days and you don't have to buy it. Run the disc and Registry cleaners, optimise your start-up and system settings. Also defrag your Registry and hard drive.

maybe you have a lot of unncessary programs or processes running in the background which are using most of the system's resources. uninstall any junk programs or programs you dont use from the add/remove program section in the control panel. You might also want to try to run a defragment on your hard disk and see if this helps
A can of compressed air might be called for, specially as it's 3 years old, they attract dust!
Hello again
Thanks for the replies.
I have downloaded that temperature thing and it says
Temp: 83oC
HDD 66oC
I mainly use it for Photoshop etc. I generally dont have lots of programs running
at the same time - perhaps photoshop and outlook express.
I do a defrag every week and have reformatted the whole thing around 6 times to get rid of junk.
Not sure if the temperature thing is good or bad!
Thanks

Hi Laura, that is much too hot (I am only fairly sure though as you haven't told us which Vaio model you have).
The processor starts to shut itself down at high temperatures and at 90 degrees it will turn off completely and crash your Vaio. Normal laptop CPU temperatures are 55 to 65 degrees so you need to clean out your air vents.
Try a can of compressed air first but if this doesn't work you will have to take your Vaio apart for a good cleaning.
If you tell us your model, there may be a guide to taking it apart.

Hello again
I think it might be a K series? Not too sure.
On the front just under the screen there is a number PCG k415s

Yep, K series.
