Connecting a FireWire Card Reader

I recently bought a Lexar RW019 FireWire CompactFlash card reader to use with my Vaio (VGN-FS215B with Windows XP). The supplied cable is 6-pin to 6-pin, so I bought a generic 6-pin to 4-pin cable to use with the Vaio’s smaller 4-pin iLink S400 connector. To my disappointment, the reader simply won’t work with my Vaio. I've tried using the reader with its original cable and a desktop PC, and this combination works fine, however even with my new Vaio (an SZ series with Vista Business) and the generic cable, no success.
I suspect that the problem is the cable, and wonder if I should be using a genuine Sony cable (such as the VMC-IL4615 1.5m iLink Digital Video Cable)? Before I spend any more money on cable, I would greatly appreciate any comments or suggestions.

Think your problem lies in the fact that it needs the two extra power prongs that is in the 6pin cable.

You'd be better off getting a USB reader, less hassle.
