Applications /icons suddenly disappeared

I have Sony Xperia XA and I have noticed that most of my icons /apps disappeared suddenly from the screen.This includes Whatsapp and GPS app. I did not download any new app. Quite soon before that my phone asked me "do you want to remove redundant files and I replied >yes< but I did not expect that they will be treated as <redundant> if that was that. How to get my icons /apps back? Is there any system restore point  like in Windows? I tried to contact Sony but no one alive emerged but they directed me to this Support forum.

Hi @MirekD, welcome to our forum!

Does it say "Safe mode" at the bottom left or right on the display? If it does, just restart the device as normal and your downloaded applications will be started up again. Safe mode is a testing mode where only the default applications are activated.

There is a feature called "Smart cleaner" in the device, but that will not do anything with applications that you actually use on a regular basis. This setting is available in Settings > Xperia Assist > Smart cleaner. If you have any performance improving/cleaning apps, these can be responsible for what has occurred, unless it says safe mode, then there is nothing to worry about.
