Why can't I highlight text?

Hi - I am working from home today, so I don't have my keyboard and mouse with me and I am using my Sony Vaio without them.

Why can I not select text to copy and paste it?

I keep getting directional arrows rather than the text being highlighted.  Could anyone help or offer any advice?
