Cannot connect to an external monitor

I have a Sony Vaio model VGN-BZ 11 MN. I cannot connect to an external monitor and when I right click on desktop and select "Personalise" and "Display settings" I only see one box with a number "1" on it. Up to some time ago I used to see another box with a number "2" on it etc. I also tried to use the option "Connect to a projector or other external display" but I still could not connect. Can you help please?

Try this:

connect the VGA-cable to the VAIO and the display.

Hold the Fn key, press the F7 key as many times as needed to make sure it's set to internal only'.

Go back to display properties, look for the box extend my desktop to this monitor.

If that doesn't work, something is wrong. Figuring out what depends on what you have available. If you have the option to try a different monitor with your VAIO or a different PC with the monitor, do that. It could also simply be the VGA cable.
