Hi,
I'm not sure which headset/headphones you have tried with your older Xperia. But there is only one standard when it comes to headphones (no mic) so any 3.5mm should work. If you are looking for a headset with a mic, the headset needs to follow the CTIA standard to be compatible with Z3 Compact.
These headsets will work fine with Z3 Compact:

Note that, if you are going to purchase a headset from a third party manufacturer you would do best by checking with the manufacturer to see if they have tested and can guarantee that they are compatible. Some headsets may require more power than the phone can deliver.

Hi kpillay92,
Which headset are you using/have you tried with? I suggest that you take a look at the following link to get further information:

The MH750 seems to be rather fragile. I used to have an Xperia SP and I had to replace the headset because the volume on one side was much lower. When I bought the Z3 Compact I kept using the replacement headset and eventually that one developed the same problem so now I am using the MH750 that came in the Z3 Compact box.
So in short, I don't think it makes sense to try and fix the headset. Just buy a new one. The MH750 costs less than £5 on Amazon.co.uk. I don't know where you live but you should be able to buy one cheaply.

Cheers mate.
However, I have tried and tested the headset on other Android devices and they work just fine. Moreover, no other headset is working on my z3 compact so it must be a software issue or some sort of settings that I have to fiddle with?
Assuming you haven't set the volume to 0
then you might have a hardware problem... perhaps the headset socket? Lastly, have you tried a phone reboot in case it helps?
I have tried using a TRRS external mic, a TRS external mic into a TRS to TRRS adaptor and each of these going into a TRRS Apple to TRRS
Nokia adaptor. At no point has either of the mics been compatible with the phone's camera. Seems a bit of a mess?!?!?!?!?
