I have just discovered with both of our Xperia Z phones, that when someone sends a message to the Z within the same minute (and there is no reply made from the Z), only the first message received is shown in the message app and only the first message causes a notification.
By using the inspectSMS app, I can see that the Z is receiving all the messages, it is not a network issue.
I also have mighty text SMS app installed on the phone and it is forwarding all the messages.
Has anyone else experienced this problem? (You may need to get someone to send you two messages in a row, otherwise you may not even know it is happening).
TIA

I’m in New Zealand myself John so I will test this here and confirm, however based on your information it does sound like a network issue.

uninstall any additional SMS/messaging apps, taskillers, antivirus, task managers > then settings > apps > all > messaging > clear everything > restart your phone > check again, most likely an app its acting up
I don't have any task killers, anti-virus or task managers. I uninstalled both InspectSMS and MightText. I cleared the data for the Messaging app. Rebooted. Still the same issue.
It is definitely only dropping messages that are sent within the same minute. If a third message is sent after a minute has elapsed, it is displayed.
It happens on both of the Xperia Z phones, which make me suspect the Xperia messaging app. Would be interesting if someone else can confirm that they don't have this issue.
I also tried the Message 7 app, interestingly, this app also misses the message sent within the same minute. I installed InspectSMS and MightyText again and they both process all messages. They don't seem to have the same issue.
I don't have this issue with my Xperia Z, repair your phone with either PCC or SUS

I have just tried putting the Z on a different network (2 degrees). On the alternate network, the phone receives the messages correctly.
Interestingly, on the other phone (Samsung S3) on the original network (Telecom), it too misses the second message, but after receiving the 3rd message after 1 minute, displays the missing message.
Seems to be an issue with a combination of the phone and the network.
then it is a network issue
Its network issue, due to traffic delay messages will be received lately or sometimes due to packet loss also messages won't be received. If the maximum time reaches before sending to the recipient, server discard the messages.
