I've been using the google calendar app with earlier phones without a problem, but on the Xperia Z it keeps the phone from sleeing and consumes a lot of battery.
Standby battery life from a full charge lasts 8-9 hours. I've had to recharge 3 times just today.
Google Calendar is currently listed as having consumed 43% of the battery.
Has anyone else seen this?

My calendar is syncing fine with FB, Google and even Exchange. It looks like ur calendar is having issue snycing wih one of your accounts online. Or, something is wrong with your calendar apps.
- to verify f the issue is the account or 1 of the accounts your have synced with the apps. try to enable them 1 by 1. and see which one is causing the problem.
- To verify if it's the Calendar app is having issues, try to set the same account on another android phone. If you're able to sync just fine, then I suggest to reflash your Android OS again. Looks like your Calendar is not working.
it's probably syncing, just try this settings > apps > all > calendar > clear data
Thanks.
I'll give that a try and see if the discharge rate is affected over night.
6 hours after clear data the calendar app is responsible for ~80% of the battery drain. It's kept the phone awake >90% of the time.
it's trying to sync with google online
turn sync off
go into caledar 3 dots top right and select default calendar as phone calendar all others should be synced not visible
I'm not sure what use I would get out of the calendar without sync on, but I tried disabling it and the battery drain stopped.

After re-enabling the accounts one by one, then disabling and re-enabling again the problem went away.
