nyc not working my Xperia Z

Hey there.

I've been trying to share photos from my xperia z to a Samsung S4 via nfc.

I tried from the same S4 to another S4 and it worked. Is this normal or do I have a problem with my Xperia?

Thanks for helping me out.

The reason we're able to send files via nfc is because of how the file is actually sent. For the Z, the NFC is only used to pair the 2 devices via bluetooth and hence the file is send via bluetooth as well. Files cannot be sent via NFC. It doesn't work that way. And since the files is send via BT, no additional apps is required. After a file is send, you will notice a msg saying that BT has successfully send a file. This works exactly like Android Beam, which is why it can send to all android devices.

But this is not be the case for Galaxy devices. Galaxy devices uses S Beam instead of Android beam. S Beam uses NFC to pair the devices but instead of using BT, it uses WI-Fi Direct to send the files. This is method is only implemented in Galaxy devices. That's why Z or other android devices won't be able to receive it files from Galaxy devices via NFC.

In a way, the implementation of the file send function via NFC for the Z, is smarter. Since it's adopting Android Beam, which is a standard on all android devices.

Edit: After reading my own post, I was wondering if it's possible to send from Galaxy devices if I just disable S Beam. And it works. Just disable S Beam on your Galaxy devices if you want to send files to other android devices.

I actually have the save problem.

I used S4 and S2 plus, the NFC works fine.

But when I want to transfer something from Z to S4, I can't even find the option to do it, though the NFC function is already ON.

Looking for answers as well!

Thanks!

I've seen this issue myself, if I transfer with another Xperia or non samsung phone it works just fine but there's something about samsung phones that doesn't allow this to work

Thanks for your reply. I figured out the reason it wasn't working with S4. That's because the nfc chip on the Xperia Z is located on the upper part of the back of the phone. While on the S4, it is positioned on the bottom. So in order to make the transfer work, I had to hold one of the phones upside down, because nfc has a range of 1 cm only.
