4G Disabled in Firmware

So I have a Sony Xperia Z3 (D6603) that was on contract with Virgin Mobile, That contract has now ended and I have discovered through searching that because Virgin don't offer 4G in the UK that they have apparently disabled the 4G in the firmware of the phone, So that the 4G doesnt work on any network even if they offer it. (I find this so stupid, Why did they bother doing this.)

I am wondering whether I would be able to flash it with a different firmware so that the 4G is enabled.

It works with other networks just not the 4G, I dont think virgin lock them anymore so I really dont understand why they disabled the 4G.

Thanks for the reply, I will try it.
