v505dp hard drives

All,

The hard drive on my V505DP sounds like it's on the way out - it's refused to boot then flagged up loads of unreadable segments on Scandisc.

Just googled for the offending drive and seeing a few reports that they don't last more then 1-2 years. 😞

Bearing in mind it's a year out of warranty, is it still worth putting it through the process for paying for a new hard drive through Sony or would it be cheaper to get my own?

dont touch sony with barge pole.....

take your harddrive, and put it out in an external box...
then get a new one and pop it in. then load up the machine fresh..

once you done that you may be fortunate to find that the old one can be read in external box.... otherwise repartition it and use it as an intermediate backup..

it is piss easy to replace hard disk.. and you can put in as much as 160gb with no troubles..
you have to tell the sony installer that you want the first partition to be 30gb and then leave the rest as the other partiiton.

you can get new laptop hdds from ebuyer or yoyo technology.. on the web or jus off totenham cort road... dont go to the sony daylight robbery centre, because they'll just have you! (chiefed me out of my free broadband offer, because they couldn't be arsed... they'll have you harder no doubt)

ebuyer cheaper... yoyotech mor instant.. can pickup

make sure you dont get SATA, but standard ide. or whatever

to swap out the disk you take a small phillips screwdriver to all the screws you can find. and un do them all.. once each one is undone pop a square of magic tape on top so you know where it lives,

then you find the hard disk.. usually there are about 3 or 4 screws holding it down. you undo them remember where those screws go... perhaps digital photo for good measure.

u might have to unscrew a bracket that is connected to the hdd.

screw that bracket onto the new one.

disconnect the connector from the old disk and put onto new one.
screw all back in and bobs your mothers. etc

hope this helps
