Screen not working (laptop)

My screen just went off. Have turned off and removed battery few times but nothing. When I press start button it sounds as though starting up but no screen so cannot see if it is doing anything. Can anyone help please? Thanks

What model Vaio do you have?

If you shine a torch on the screen, can you see the image dimly?

Do you see the Vaio logo when you first switch on?

Same problem my model number is VPCEB3LOE/BQ. No Vaio sign at start up hence I have to connect to an external output using a HDNI cable. I can also not see a dim image when I point a torch Some times I use the Vaio care One Click Care and the problem gets fixed, sometimes it gets fixed on its own after a while, but bfore it does I see pink lines come and go like the dispay is trying to come back.

Hello the Vaio model is VGN N38E/W.  I have tried the torch and yes I can see it dimly and sure the vaio logo came up on switch on - is that looking promising??

Your advice is much appreciated.

Hi Cat007,

That makes it likely that the Backlight or the Inverter has failed and you will need a repair.  Inverters typically cost about £35 - plus labour of course.  A lot cheaper than a motherboard replacement

If this is the problem, your Vaio should work when connected to an external monitor.

hi i had same problem on vgn s4m, screen was dim, problem is i ordered a inverter from ebay and that didnt work, i then ordered a ccfl backlight and replaced it tho was abit of soldering to do and was a pain to get screen back on. but its all workin now. cost me £10 for each part. hope this helps. i read somewhere u can use a multimeter to check inverter 1st, but i didnt go this option so now have a spare inverter laying around.
