S1 CPU Dothan or Banias?

Hi, how can I check what kind of CPU I have got in my laptop? I bought one with a new Dothan Pentium Processor, but when I downloaded the Driver package of the VAIO-LINK website it gave me the older ¿Banias¿ CPUdriver?
My head is full with question marks right now. By the way my laptop is vgn-S1xp.
Thanks in advance!

Hi,

i'm not so sure if this is a way to check but it may be worth a try. I use this software called CHKCPU.exe in dos, it displays most of the cpu details. You may be able to match these to the manufacturers website of what everything should be for that model of cpu.

I really haven't had enough time to mess about with settings to find out if it does what you want, but it may be helpful.

Another idea may be to take the cover off and look at the cpu, they usually have writing on with models versions etc (well i know they do for PC's not sure about a laptop!) may be worth a try too just don't end up breaking anything

Whoops! Don't take the cover off your laptop to look at the processor. If Wills software doesn't work, this one will tell you.

yeah okay dont take the cover off, thats probably a bad idea. Its one of my bad habits, to take everything to bits to see how it works... only a couple of days ago i took my ipod to bits.

Well you learn something new everyday, and that is sandra is still going. I didn't even realise that is still around. May have to have a play with that later on. Sure that will tell the cpu model etc, it used to be good when i tried it a few years ago.

Thanks for all the replies guys and girl:smileygrin:
I run the ID program and it is indeed the newer Dothan Processor.
I only wonder why Sony would give the Baniascpudriver in the driverpackage though?:smileyconfused:

No idea, I didn't think CPUs did need drivers.

The CPU needs a driver in Windows XP for the Intel SpeedStep technology to work.

It is normally the PROCESSR.SYS file that is used as a generic Intel driver for Service Pack 1, and the INTELPPM.SYS file for Service Pack 2.
