playing video files

hi

i have an old sony pcv-v1/g (pcv-6603)

i cannot open some video files in windows media player eg. .AVI files

i tried to run movie DVD's but was unable

the video is scrambled and i can just hear the audio

i even tried VLC player but it is not working

but i can open .WMW files could watch a movie clip i had edited in windows movie maker

what could be the problem?

Hi. How were you able to resolve the issue? Usually VLC got no problems playing AVI files and mostly have 90% of the codecs installed.
