Optical Drive Issues

Hi Everybody,

I have been browsing through this forum today for a while and realized that there are all kinds of issues with the optical drives Sony is delivering with their notebooks (but not limited to notebooks). Despite there may be some problems related to incorrect system setup I would regard a significant amount of them as hardware (?) related. I am having such a problem too.
I just wonder whether Sony is aware of this and whether they have identified the root causes of all these issues. Are there any driver related problems or is it a manufacturing problem? I would like Sony being more responsive and active on these quality issues. So far I am very disappointed with the way Sony is handling the problems.

By the way, I also do not appreciate the way Sony is bundling their notebooks with Sony SW packages that aren't really good in my opinion but intend to bind customers to their products. In terms of updates and bug fixing this part (have a look which SW has been updated recently) seems to be far better supported than the pure basics of the system.

Best Regards
Rolu :slight_frown:

Thanks Rob, thats pretty handy to know.
I feel kinda robbed now knowing this... but no wonder the drives are getting mega cheap, they're trowing quality out for quantity.

Sad world we live in now.

Yeah it's all about the money. It's sad.
When people pay premium prices for their hardware they expect premium quality and premium service. Sony up untill this moment fails to deliver.
What bothers me the most is their phone support. It would've been a better idea to place someone behind the phones who actually knows a deal about the hardware they sold instead of someone who's rude and gives no concrete answer to the problem at hand.
It is also a shame that Sony themselves don't use this forum to get customer feedback. It is a treasure of information for free.
You don't have to spend ten thousands of dollars to do a market research but no they keep their eyes closed to so many matters at hand.
Sony is in need of some seriuos policy changes.
Mine next notebook being a Vaio isn't very likely at the moment.:smileyangry:

Yeah I agree, they need to get experienced staff manning those phones.

As for Sony not using this resource, they did write us a letter about how Sony Japan were reading some of the things here and bearing them in mind. I really hope they do, as it's improtant for Sony to improve and bring the VAIO to the next stage, and be cool yet commerical.

I still feel the VAIO has got too commercialised, it was a nice niche market for people who liked media, and wanted a quality media product.

My S1XP is only a few months old now, and so far everything is still operating as it should. However the content of this thread suggests that my optical drive is sitting on Death Row without any chance of reprieve, and that thought sucks.

The thing that does my head in even more so, is that we can only find out about these problems after we've all parted with a shed load of cash buying the products.

I hate it when people like us get shat on my corporate giants like Sony, we need to stand up and get ourselves heard. Remember that this forum & it's content is owned by Sony, so legally they should be aware of the optical drive issues. If they continue selling products which are known to be inherently faulty, then they must be responsible for resolving any problems right?

Try these sites for info on customer rights & stuff....

Sorry but I'm gonna bump this topic again. I still see Optical Drive problems on this forum every time I return.
Sony really needs to adress this problem.

Well anyone watching the world of CD/DVD drive failures on here may well have already seen my GRX416SP rant back in Sept last year, but in the interests of a good bump I feel I should add to this ever growing string of complaints.
Mine died with no warning whatsoever after around 2 years of service - one day I was burning a new CD for the car, next day, not even an LED flicker on powerup and no drive listing in the device manager.
As it was already a victim of ramslotitis (which rumour has it is fixed by a $700 new mobo according to Sony) so rather than go through the silly cost of repairs I have sacked it, got myself a new Packard Bell desktop (made by NEC and supported wonderfully by PB) shifted all my work to the PC - problem sorted
The GRX416SP has been consigned back to it's box until such time as the cash permits to get it sorted (NOT by Sony) and then got rid of.
The upshot of all this; Sony don't give a monkeys once their liability ceases after the warranty period. That is pretty clear to anyone. I'm severly impressed by the aftersales support from Packard Bell. When anyone asks me for my thoughts on computers, I will be telling them to avoid Sony like the plague. If Sony are so arrogant as to think customers won't tell their friends and collegues how unreliable the products are and how nonexsistent the backup is, more fool them.

Rant ongoing.
