Hello,
Need some help. Last night is adding some music to my phone using my laptop, while loading I was having some problems with the USB connection not working, gave up and tried to switch on my laptop this morning and had the error message above. no disc in drive or USB cables are attached to the laptop.
I have trawled the web but it looks like I need to re install Windows XP, I do not have any of the original discs.
I have tried hitting F2 and changing the BIOS.
Does anyone have any suggestions other than buying a new copy of Windows XP off the web.
Thanks.

The usual way is to borrow a XP Pro Installation disc from someone and to use it to boot into the Recovery Console to refresh the files.
As you say, there are many fixes on Google like this one: -

Trying this may be better than having to buy a retail copy of XP.

I would also check for malware infection using both antivirus and anti malware.spyware (recomend Avast and MalwareBytes both do good free versions) or if you have had an infection and healed it this may have been due to that a repointed dll or similar is not there or lacks dependencies. somnetimes the original file is still there but the registry is not pointing at it anymore. there was one a while ago that affected atapi.sys. worth a look 🙂
Blencogo,
Thanks, did see that site and finally managed to get in but still cannot boot up with out the disc in the laptop. Changed the boot.ini, NTLDR and other boot file but still no success.
I will just carry on with the disc in the laptop, as I only use it now and then.
thanks.
