I've had a PCG- FR315B for some months now. Its always run a little slow, but I've just deciced to upgrade the memory - so I ran a check to find out what exactly I have already - windows system information tells me I have 256MB, I have a 256MB chip installed - but windows task manager and system properties (from the control pannel) tell me I have only 128MB total physical memory. How did this happen and can i fix it with out the hassle of using my warranty?
Try getting Everest Home Edition to see how much RAM you have, this is a lot more accurate.
I noted from your machine specs at Vaio-Link that up to 128Mb can be used as Video memory.
If you are indeed using 128Mb as Video memory this would explain the missing RAM, and if so the there is no cause for concern
Thanks - i've run everest and it seems mandy was right - it seems ALL my memory is allocated to video "AGP Aperture Size: 256 MB"
Any suggestions? Should i try to limit the aperture size to something less than 128MB?
If you're not having trouble I would leave it be.
Just for the record, is there any way to reduce the amount of memeory ones graphics card uses. Mine is currently set at 64mb, which is way more than I need, considering all I use my Laptop for is Pro-Audio stuff (think static screen style apps all day long)...
It depends on your model, if it has shared memory then it may be possible. A better solution is to increase system memory, upgrades are pretty cheap these days - check out http://www.crucial.com/uk for prices for your computer.
