Your firmware upgrade should not cause any harm to your computer. Firmware is provided to fix errors such as media recognition errors (DVD+R in your case), and in some cases used to repair errors in the microcode.

Generally, the the of thumb I use is if it is highly benificial, then I download and install it. Sony will briefly explain what the upgrade will do, and offer a disclaimer.

I would use caution on upgrading the BIOS unless you need to for Service Pack 2 compliance, or to fix serious underlying issues (such as corrupt ACPI/PCI-IRQ Routing errors).

I would go a little further and say any firmware upgrade should be treated with the same caution, Bios or otherwise both could render hardware useless. I concede a buggered drive is not as costly as a useless computer but the risks are the same.

Despite this I have used both several times without problems .

Yep I'm with James on this. Unless there's a big benefit or I'm already having problems I ignore firmware updates and BIOS upgrades.

Tyger,

Unless I got out of the wrong side of bed today it is "me " exercising caution with both and James only exercising caution with BIOS updates.:smileysad:
