DCR-HC44 handycam

Hi,  My Sony DCR-HC44 handycam won't work with Windows 7.  Sony sent me a link to update to PMB but this still won't recognise my camcorder.  I have used an i-link cable to connect the camcorder to the computer but it still won't work!!!  I cannot think of anything else to try.  I have three tapes that I want to put onto DVDs but don't know how I can if it won't work with Windows 7.

Is it possible to transfer the tapes to a memory stick in the camcorder?

Any help would be appreciated.

When you say that you have been sent a link, were you sent this one?

As you will see at the bottom, there are a few conditions that you need to apply to the DCR-HC44 so that it works in Windows 7 i.e. it needs a specific version of PMB downloaded from .....

..... or it also states that iLink is an option if you are using Windows Movie Maker. Windows 7 doesn't always come with Movie Maker pre-installed but it can be downloaded free from here:

As a last resort, when I had this situation in the past I still had a copy of my Windows XP CD and I decided to install this onto my PC as a backup operating system. This can be very handy for other compatibility situations such as this and your PC can give you a menu whem you turn on your PC that asks you which system you would like to load up. Files downloaded on either operating system can be saved into a common folder than can be accessed by the other.

Click on "Picture Motion Browser" software download for users of "Picture Package" or "ImageMixer for HDD Camcorder". You will need to ensure that you have the original software disc as it does require a code. Once you click on the link please follow the instructions provided and you should be able to use your camera with Windows 7.

Should you require further assistance, please do not hesitate to contact me."

I have tried all this but it still won't work.  My laptop doesn't have an i-link port but my PC does.  They both run Windows 7.  Somewhere in the instructions sent to me it states that it will only work with an i-link connection.

Unfortunately I don't have a CD of Windows XP - this was pre-installed on my previous laptop which I gave to my niece!

I am wondering whether it could be that the i-link cable I have is quite old - probably at least 10 years old so perhaps a new one would solve the problem?

Anyway, any thoughts you may have would be appreciated.

Hello Carol,

As the camera is USB enabled, it is always worth giving it a go over the USB connection as there is a small chance that, depending upon the software package used, it will work. Have you tried it in Windows Movie Maker (the link was in my first message).

I would definitely try the above before going out and buying a new iLink cable.
