Audio cuts out, what's the cause?

Recently my Bravia TV has been suffering from intermittent audio cut outs. Resets don't help but when in fault mode the headphone icon comes on even though there's nothing plugged in. This seems to be a common problem with several Sony models, there's plenty of info on the web about workarounds to this problem (such as disabling the headphone function in settings) but nothing on actually repairing the fault. Is there a common hardware failure causing it? If so which component(s) need changing (as I'd like to fix it properly).

Hi @dereklane   Bravia TV is just a generic name for a Sony TV. For the best assistance please provide the full model number of your TV.

As already told bravia means nothing being the brand name for over a decade . In any case where did you find the same problem on internal speakers? Normally sound cut-out are experienced (on Sony and other TV brands ) when connected to avr .

In your specific case I don't remember any symbol displayed on screen when inserting a headphone , but I may be wrong (or your 8 years model has it) and it could indicate that the headphone socket is somehow broken or dirty and create a false contact. You may want to try to clean it up.

I've already tried putting a jack in & twisting it around to clean it, but to no avail. The headphone icon appears to the LHS of the on-screen audio level display bar (as seen when changing audio level) when it thinks the headphones are installed.
