star on the notification bar

Ive just got a star next to the signal bars. What does that mean?

You have changed to priority mode,use volume button to trigger sound modes and select normal or silent to change.

What does a priority mode do? What does it change..

You can select which services are able to interrupt and send notifications. You can have messages,contacts and events.

Where can we select what can be notified? In the app there are only the menu options as to what we want as mode.
