Recieved SMS message's dont show as a preview/banner

Hi guys, My new xperia z3 compact arrived today but i am having some issues

i want my phone to show a banner that scrolls down from the top of the screen when i recieve a text message displaying the senders name and message contents (similar to the banners on iphone) alerting me that i have a new SMS message, this banner should show when i am using the phone

currently when i recieve a message all i get to alert me is the message sound, an icon on the top of the phone but no banner

after searching forums i believe some users call this a message preview, i have always called it a notification banner and i am not sure of the correct term

a friend has the same phone and his does this out the box so i know this is possible

to confirm this a new phone with the only apps installed are the ones that come pre installed

and in my messenger app>settings that "notifications" are turned on

and in settings>sound&notification>app notifications>messaging that "block" is not enabled and "priority" is

any help or ideas would be greatly apreciated

Liam

I think the difference here is the software versions in your phones (or perhaps the messaging app used). On the older version with Android 4.4 you would see senders name without sliding down the notification bar but in Android 5/5.1 you need to slide down the notification bar at the top to see the preview when using our messaging app. But if you switch to Hangouts for SMS you don't need to swipe down. Open Hangouts and go to Settings -> SMS -> SMS disabled to switch to Hangouts.

Hi Liam3, welcome to the community!

Follow @Phy's suggestion.

If the issue was not present in Safe Mode, that indicates a third party app is causing the issue. In this case exit
Safe Mode and then un-install any third party apps you don't need and clear the cache/data for the apps you want to keep. If this doesn't help or you have found that the issue was still present in Safe Mode - you will need to run a software repair on the handset.

Thanks for the replies Sofia and Phy

Unfortunately the issue is still present in safe mode

Could you please explain how to run a software repair?

Thanks again

Try settings-apps-all,tap on 3 dots and reset app preferences. If this does not help either, you may need to perform a software repair using PC Companion. The process will erase all internal memory. You might need to charge your device for about 1-2 hours before so the device has at least 80% battery.

Make sure the device is not connected to computer or laptop and turned off (sometimes you have to press power button and volume up until the device vibrates 3 times or on some devices you have to press the small button near the SIM tray or on the back of the device).

Open PC companion->support zone->phone/tablet software update->repair my phone/tablet blue highlighted.Follow the steps given,do not connect your phone until prompted to press volume down while plugging USB cable. If PC companion does not start the repair process, you might need to run it in compatibility mode with Windows 7 (in some cases XP).

I've performed the software repair using the pc companion but unfortunately the issue still persists, I also tried to reset app preferences but still no luck

Thanks for your help anyway
