Phone keeps hardresetting after water damage

I fell into the water about 2 days ago along with my phone. Then I found out water got into my phone because one of the lids rubber band was broken (it broke after just a few months of normal usage). I quickly turned the phone off by holding volume up+power, and tried to get some water out. After some time I attempted to boot it up, but nothing happened. The battery was probably drained because of the water, so I put it into a wall charger. It seemed to boot up normally, I got the Sony logo, then the battery charging icon. After that it tried to boot again. It showed the logo again, and then shut down. After this, when the phone was plugged into a charger, the red light flashed, and after that the phone vibrated 3 times, and it keeps repeating this. I've put the phone in a bowl of uncooked rice with the lids open so that it would get more water out if any was left for about 24 hours. Now I've put it back into the charger, but it keeps doing the same thing over and over again. After disconnecting it, it does that for about 1-2 more times, and then stays off. When I put it into my computer it does the same, but after the red light, it turns blue, and then vibrates. I suspect there might be some water left on the volume up+power button, causing it to hard reset as long as it has power.

What could I do to repair it? And would this still be under warranty because the lid broke after only a few months of usage causing me to get water damage?

There are probably residues from water that causes short circuits within device so it can't boot up properly. Some integrated circuits might also get damaged. The problem with water ingress is that inside of the device are lot's of shields to protect you from magnetic fields. But they also keep water very close to the fragile electronics.

If you feel you have tools and abilities you could try to disassemble the phone and inspect it by yourself or let it fully dry. It's not a trivial task so if you haven't done such things before you could create more damage than it's already done. Look at the step by step guide of disassembling: http://www.xperiablog.net/2013/09/15/xperia-z1-disassembly-guide/

Your warranty is probably void (have you tried to contact Xperia Care?) because of damaged flaps. If they were damaged you shouldn't put the phone into water but contact service center. They might then ability to inspect if they failed because of any manufacturing flaw or by abuse.

Now, after water is in they will almost for sure void the warranty and charge you for inspection, because you immersed the phone in water with flaps damaged / not properly closed / open.

I would suggest you to call few shops that sell and service used phones. Maybe they will be able to help you by replacing the motherboard or parts on it. Sometimes they can help without ruining the wallet so it's worth to try.

Hi,

I have had my Xperia Z1 for only about one and a half year now. It started about fourteen months ago. The filter covering the bottom speaker of my phone that is supposed to keep water and dust out started to let water seep through and let go on one side. After some time it fell off completely.

The thing above caused my phone to get water damage. But I only found out as soon as water got in which, unfortunately, caused my phone to be pretty much unusable for a week and also for the proximity sensor to break.

I have contacted Sony's support about this, but it is my own fault. It was pretty much impossible for the filter to break if I had used the phone normally (which I did when you consider standard daily usage of a phone normal). Their point was; the water detecting pads on the inside were pink, so my warranty is lost, and it is all my fault.

The next thing that started to break is the lid that seals the charging port. The rubber was letting go and it kept falling open. Some time after that the rubber was gone and not soon after that the lid just broke off.

The paint on the the is wearing off. And just today the ring around the power button fell off.

I would like to point out that I am not using the phone in any damaging way. Unless using it daily to chat, game, browse the Web, watch YouTube video's and after a day of usage leaving it for a nightly charge is harmful to a phone. I hope that is not the case. Especially not with a supposedly sturdy high quality phone like the Xperia Z1 I got.

Are there any other people who are experiencing similar issues with the phone and/or the support? Please let me know.

Greetings,
Kevin

I'm sorry to hear that but that's something you have to address with Sony directly

Hmm, this is quite some time after the hard resetting problem. That is solved by indeed letting it dry for some more time. But this problem is not the hardresetting, but the phone not being able to survive even a year without random parts breaking off while other phones do.
