Anyone got MHL working? I tried this with 5.1.1 to no effect (the Bravia TV recognised the adapter but the phone didn't react when plugged in). Should I revert or is there a way to test this? So far I've tried two different adapters - the first wasn't recognised by the TV, the second was - progress! All cables have been swapped to no effect.

It seems your phone doesn't even detect it's connected with MHL which i'm afraid does sound like hardware to me.
Your course of action is what i would suggest as well. A software repair to make sure that it's not a software issue in your phone and then try another adapter (or another Xperia phone with yours) to see where the hardware issue is.
In case it's your phone i recommend that you contact a service location or your local support team for assistance with having it repaired/replaced.
MHL works fine when i test it here with our IM750.
Did your adapters work before you updated your phone? Have you plugged in the power cord to the adapter?
Only tested with 5.1.1 as I've only had the phone for about 5-6 weeks and upgraded the software fairly quickly. Power was plugged in - two seperate cables tested on that too, as well as two different power adapters. The only thing I didn't have two of, was the phone!
The adapter with the most progress (the Bravia recognised it for what it was) was this one: http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B00T7WYYX6 - LINDY MHL 3.0 to HDMI 4K Adapter
Looking at the reviews for this device and the specifications for this adapter i believe it should work.
What happens if you connect the phone, open the dialer and enter *#*#7378423#*#*, select Service tests -> TV-Out test. Are you able to access Video format and select a video format?
I get this with both adapters
I played with the test settings but could not provoke an output. At the weekend I'll try a clean install of 5.1 and if that doesn't work the previous version if there is nothing else to test. Once the software is eliminated as a root cause then I'll try hardware. There might be an mhl adapter at work I can also try with.
