Posting in the hope to help people who have come across this problem with their MP3 Walkman players.
Device will not switch on
Not recognised by computer
As described here
From my investigations this appears to mean that the storage disk is dead.
When plugged into a Windows XP system, the device is recognised and displays "Full" on the device's screen (though the disk is not full).
Windows7 cannot recognise the device at all.
Attempts to upgrade the firmware error with "no disk".
Conclusion: Dead disk
Solution: The bin.

You may be able to fix your device using the Windows 7 Troubleshooter.
Once the device is connected, open Devices & Printers from the Start Menu.
Walkman should show in there.
Right click on Walkman and select Troubleshoot
Follow the prompts, you may be prompted to install a new driver etc.
Let Windows do its thing and you may get your device working again.
Or you may not, like I didn't. But it was worth a try.
