Am I right in assuming I need a 2.5" SATA drive of any make, original is 5400 can I change to 7200rpm

Yes, you are right. Any 2.5" SATA drive will fit as long as it is a slimline drive - no more than 9.5mm thick.
You can go for a faster speed of 7200rpm but his may be noisier and consume more battery.
5400rpm slimline drives are available up to 1TB capacity.
