I have an vgn n11m with single module 512M and one free slot. I wanted to know if I can enlarge it with the same size module (i.e 512-symmetric) or can use the 1024 size as well?

Hi Robbor24 and welcome to Club Vaio.

Your N11 Vaio has two slots which can hold up to 1024 MB memory each. As these are not paired nor do they support dual-channel memory, you do not have to have two modules the same.

So yes, you can add a 1024 MB module.
