PCV-V1 DVD drive problem

Has anyone else had problems with the DVD drive on their PCV-V1 - it looks like mine has just crashed - it can't even play CD's at the moment - I've logged the problem with e-support but I'm pretty desperate to get it working again - as everything is built in with the V1 I'm worried that it may not be replaceable - if anyone knows anything about this machine then please help

Have you upgraded to SP2? I understand that this can cause problems with optical drives.

As DT said, SP2 can cause trouble with optical drives.

From my experience (for what its worth), I had to upgrade the BIOS (risky) with WinPhlash, and apply another firmware patch (also very risky). You could try this (they are likely to be available for your model if you need them from HERE) but it is not a miracle cure. Be very careful if you do choose to do this.

Remember I have been fortunate.

Thanks for the advice. After phoning up the service line I've actually had the machine picked up to be repaired by Sony so I'm waiting to see what they come up with. They were very efficient about this.

I hadn't actually upgraded it at all, so I'm really not sure what's caused the problem. It's pretty worrying though, I've only had the model for about six/seven months (so at least I'm still covered by the warranty).

I have had a number of problems with the V1. (re: poor quality LCD screen and burning software). But looking at the new models coming out, it does look as though Sony may have corrected the problems with this machine. They've got much better graphics and faster burning drives on the new models so maybe they knew that the original model was flawed.

Here's hoping anyway.

Hello,
I am having the same problem. I can play DVD's but when I put a new one on the driver it does not recognise it. I tried different softwares and even on the windows explorer it says the driver is empty. I can play and burn cd's and I also upgraded SP2 recently. I had never tried do create dvd's before the upgrade.
Anybody can help?

Check VAIO-Link for firmware and BIOS updates.
