Online system hang

Had my Vaio a couple of years now, but recently it's started hanging within 2 minutes of going online. It's not the BT line (that works fine on another notebook), and the modem is apparently working fine. If I don't log on I can use the notebook as usual, but once I've connected and it hangs, I can't use any other function. Any ideas what's wrong? Could it be IE 7?

The very same thing happens to me all the time. The computer works fine when im in failsafe (like now when im posting) but when i start windows normal it hangs as soon as i use any internet in any program.
