Just finished my exams,
and I am amanging with the busted fan problem but now the DVD drive is not being detected - as in if I go to my computer, its just not there, even though if I stick in a disk it will make noises and flash like its reading the disk - what should I do?????
Hi Peteri,
You don't give us a lot of information!
What model Vaio?
Vista or XP?
Go to Device Manager - you will have to find your own way as you don't specify what Operating System you are using. Expand CD/DVD-ROM Drives.
Double-click on the drive in Device Manager - What error code is Device Manager reporting? If it is code 19, 31, 32, 39 or 41 then a small registry edit should sort the problem.
The following involves changes to the registry and I recommend that you set a System Restore Point.
Then:
1.Click Start -> Run and type: REGEDIT , and hit enter (for XP for Vista type it in the Search).
2. Navigate to –
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}
click on this and locate UpperFilters in the right-hand window, (if it exists) right click on this and select Delete and then OK.
3. Under the same Registry Key locate LowerFilters, (if it exists) right click on this and select Delete and then OK.
4. Quit Registry Editor and re-boot the computer, new registry values will be created that will hopefully cure the problem.
After you remove the Upperfilters value and the Lowerfilters value, you may possibly need to re-install your burning software if it doesn't work – but not usually.

Hey Blen  ,
Yea sorry it's XP the model is a VDN-FJ3S/W. Also when I say it completely undetected it's as if my laptop doesnt even have a DVD drive (but it does i'm opening it as I type this). Yea, theres no CD/DVD drop down menu in device manager... I am truely bamboozled
Hi Peter,
I'm afraid that if it does not appear in Device Manager it is probably a hardware fault and you will need a repair.
If it was working recently, try a System Restore to a point when the drive was working: -
Start -> All Programs -> Accessories -> System Tools -> System Restore

Came across this site but i have no idea if it'll work.
I basically says to edit the registry.
One quick question - Is the drive visible in the BIOS?
To find out restart the machine and when you see the VAIO logo press F2 a few times and on one of the tabs should be the list of drives.
Absolutely nothing...
Yea I'm defintely taking it in to the shop cus' this is ridiculous... but thanks for your help guys.
Sorry to say it but I think it's died.
