Jumping Cursor

Hi, can anyone help please? I have a Sony VAIO VGN-FE31H laptop. Just upgraded (clean install) to Vista following the step by step guide that came with the upgrade pack. Everything seems ok, but, I am experiencing a strange problem: the mouse cursor is somewhat erratic and jumps at will across the screen. When I am typing an email or word document (and indeed this posting), the cursor jumps to a point a few spaces or lines previous whilst I am mid flow! Any ideas as to the cause? I've been on Microsoft's website, and done a search on this forum, but no-one else seems to be having this quirky niggle.

Any help much appreciated.

Thanks,
Paul

Hi Paul,

welcome to Club Vaio..

First could you go to Device Manager, double click Mouse and Other Pointing Devices.

Do you have a PS2 mouse or a Pointing device listed..?

If so go to Start > Control panel > Hardware and Sound > Mouse..

A mouse properties window should open..

select the Tapping Tab and make sure the Tap Off when Typing box is checked..

Hopefully you should have an ALPS Pointing Device installed but if not download and install the Pointing Device Driver 7.0.501.5 for your FE31H from here ..

Hi Thalamus,

Thank you for taking the trouble to reply. I have checked device manager, the mouse is listed as a PS2 device. There is also a device called Sony Notebook Control Device. There isn't any reference to an ALPS pointing device. In Control Panel, double clicking the mouse icon does not display a Tapping Tab.

I have tried to locate the driver that you mentioned following the link but without success. Any other suggestions?

I have a USB mouse somewhere - I'll try connecting that to see if the problem persists.
Many thanks,
Paul
