different, when I look at the back of the PC it says PCG-9S1M???

Have I been given the wrong laptop??

The number on the backplate is only for Sonys use. The 'real' model number should be on the front somewhere near the screen.

You should be able to go to http://www.vaio-link.com and type your serial number in the download area and this will take you to a model specific download page. It will also show the model of your PC in the dropdown list at the top.
