Hi!
I have a sony vaio VGN-FE21S which its processor centrino duo T2400 supports VT-x. The problem is that it is disabled in BIOS by default by sony and in BIOS there is no option to enable it.
So I want to enable it because I need it. I work doing virtualisation and for this reason I need it. I googled and I find some people saying that there is a solution for this and it is to write a 0x5 value to msr register 0x3A to enable VMX flag and get VT-x enabled. Is it right? I would like someone confirm me if this is possible.
I'm very angry with sony because I have contacted them in several occasions and they never didn't provide me a solution.
My current BIOS version is R0132J3.
I'm thinking of not buying any vaio laptop anymore.
Thanks very much for your help!
Here is a little bedtime reading for you!!!
At your own risk of course!
******* PLEASE HELP!!!!!!!! *******************
Hi!
First of all thanks very much for you help. I have seen this yet but the problem of this method is that you need to know what register is according to your BIOS version and in this page my model laptop doesn't appear:
http://forum.notebookreview.com/5190101-post227.html
First It appears a VGN-FE21SR model and I think it's different from VGN-FE21S (I'm not sure, I would like someone confirm me 100 per cent that VGN-FE21S is the same as VGN-FE21SR)
Second, the register depends on BIOS Version and my BIOS version doesn't appear there. There appears BIOS version R0200J3 and mine is R0132J3 so I think reg 0195 is not valid for my BIOS (I'm not sure, I would like someone confirm me 100 per cent that this is the register I need to modify).
For these two reasons I prefer to not do it after I'm sure that this register is the I need to modify according my BIOS version.
However, I have googled and I found another easier method. This method says you can write a 0x5 value to 0x3A msr register cpu to enable vmx flag and get VT-x enabled. My doubt is: Is this msr register (0x3A) the one I need to modify for my sony vaio VGN-FE21S with intel centrino duo processor T2400 ? Also I'll highly appreciate if someone can confirm me 100 per cent that this is the register I need to modify for my processor type and this is the value I need to write to. I know that msr register can be written using msr tools from linux:
wrmsr 0x3A -p0 0x5 for first core and wrmsr 0x3A -p1 0x5 for second core. Finally, If I do this I would like to know if it is also necessary to do the method of alter register 0195 in BIOS.
Thanks very much.
