Dolby Atmos

When I use the dedicated Prime and Netflix buttons on my Z9J remote control I can only get Dolby Surround via my Arcam amp. If I access them via my Apple TV box for the same programmes I can get Dolby Atmos sound. Does anyone know why this is?

Thanks for your reply. I’ve checked regarding updates and I’m up to date. I can use the dedicated remote control buttons to access Prime or Netflix and the amp displays Dolby Surround. If I then watch the same programmes via the Apple TV box the amp flags up Dolby Atmos. Also in the programme descriptions, when using the remote the audio shows up as 5.1 yet when watching the same programme via the Apple TV box the audio description shows Dolby Amos.

Be aware that TV and Apple TV are not connected to the same port on the amp: the first is connected to the HDMI ARC output port, the second via HDMI input port. Also the behaviour and configuration of the amp can be different

Thanks for your reply. I am using other HDMI inputs on the Arcam amp for both Sky Q and the Oppo 203 and with both inputs with the appropriate content the amp displays Dolby Atmos.

Indeed, but TV is using the hdmi output port on amp that use a different return channel for audio

So, taking that into consideration, does that mean that it will not be possible to access Dolby Atmos using this output port?

I'm not saying this, I was just suggesting you have a look also at your amp's support site/forum because it can be an issue on it rather than the TV. From a streaming app, Dolby Atmos is embedded in a Dolby Digital Plus lossy codec, so an ARC port suffice (you don't need eARC for it, that is needed instead for lossless tracks), but i.e. if the app itself do not recognize the device as Atmos compatible, it could be that the amp is passing this information in the HDMI EDI information on the output port.

Yea it's more like a testing phase now where we have to narrow it down really, the second you can really identify where the issue is coming from you'll be able to tackle it.

I've checked the Arcam manual and there are only two HDMI out options, the one I am using is the arc dedicated one.

Further to my last post, the puzzle deepens! On the z9j I used the BBC iPlayer app to access Wimbledon to watch the tennis in UHD but the option wasn’t there. Tried it again on the Sony XG9005 in the kitchen using the onboard app and I could access the UHD option.

Hi davidc161, what's the current software version? Press help on the remote to get it.

Also, did you try any troubleshooting steps? unplugging the TV from the mains for few minutes while disconnecting any external device sometimes helps.
