How do I force the mini-pro to preferentially use free local wifi spots (home, work etc) that it has loaded into it, rather than doing downloads over the Next-G mobile telephone network which costs me money.

if its a MMS message it will ALWAYS go through your network, other than that, if you turn on your wifi your 3G network will be off. once the wifi it's on, the 3G/H/G/E icons should disappear from the notification bar, if they haven't, that means that even if your wifi it's on, your phone hasn't being able to connect to a wifi network

if you want to be 100% sure, on the homescreen press MENU -> add -> widget -> Data traffic, this will turn off your data completely so everything you do (internet) will have to be through a wifi

I prefer this widget

Power Control

it allows you to add a lot more and it looks cool (set it as 100% transparent)
