I have a new bdp-s370, updated & working but does not play any MKV videos. Other types seem OK, just does not play any files with .mkv sffix.

It can be a little fussy with regards to how they have been encoded, Either try renaming the exension to .avi or maybe use a DLNA streamer that can transcode on the fly, like Serviio.
