Google Maps keeps running, Cell standby

How can I stop these applications from running? It seems like it consumes my battery life. When I am checking what process is using the maps, it said that com.google.android.apps.maps.HotpotService is using the maps. Even if I end the maps application, this process is automatically restarting. How can I stop this process? Also, I noticed that when there is no cell signal, the Cell Standby is consuming too much battery. Is there any method for this to stop consuming too much battery?

after you are done using your maps press the BACK button instead of the home button

I am already doing that. Moreover, the maps is being used by "Rate Places". This application automatically starts even if I force close it. How can I permanently close it?

try to update to 2.3.3 it does increase your battery life and fix a lot of the bugs if not all, check with PC Companion or Update Service
