I assume you want to use your phone as a "Wi-Fi hotspot". This isn't possible on the W995. It's available on some newer Android OS versions, and I imagine other smartphones, but its not avialable on our standard feature phones.

There seems to be some confusion as to the definition of the word "tethering", as sometimes it's used to describe the use of a phone as a hot-spot/router and sometimes used to describe the use of a phone as a modem. So can it mean either?

I don't know if you can tether with an iPad, but I use my W995 as a 3G modem with my laptop when I'm travelling and can't get a free wi-fi connection, it works fine. If you can get the Sony Ericsson syncronisation software on the iPad, then I'm sure you should be able to connect to the internet using your W995 phone. The connect I use is with the USB lead.
